‘Standing just inches from him was a man. He had blood around his face, and bloodshot eyes. He was short in stature, but looked strong.
The newcomer opened his mouth as if to speak but instead came the same high-pitched sound from which Emma and Steven had been running. Her hand wrapped firmly around Steven’s, they waited for either man to make the next move.
The man with the torch took a nervous step back, but in an instant the other was lunging for him. The torch swung around, spun to the floor, and Emma heard the loud thud of the two men falling.
There was screaming. The light continued to spin on the floor, offering fleeting, terrifying tableaux of the room and the attack just feet away from them.
Emma took Steven by the hand and ran out of the door. The screaming continued. Desperate cries for help, and screams of pain filled their ears.’

1 Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?
I would say so. Although only ever thought of it as something to pass the time. I travel on my own a lot, and found myself writing poems, short stories and random bits of nonsense along the way.
2 Where does your inspiration for these stories come from?
Well, I guess it is thing I grew up with, which is reading and watching movies. In recent years I have travelled to some grim places and met some odd people, so it could be a mix of everything.
3 What was your favourite chapter to write and why?
I always like the beginning. No matter what I am writing, the beginning offers endless direction and ideas. After that, I enjoy the ending. There is nothing quite as satisfying as finishing a book.
4 Where is your favourite place to write?
In any dark room with a few candles burning in the corner. I like to be undisturbed, so have my phone off, and avoid answering the door, should it knock.
5 Do you use a computer/laptop for your first draft or are you a pen and paper writer?
At home, I use a laptop. On my travels, it’s a pen and paper.
6 How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?
This can vary from a few months, to a year. I book hop though, so often I start a book, and have already started another by the time I finish the original one. I try not to force ideas out.
7 Have you ever suffered from a “writer’s block”? What did you do to get past the “block”?
Just write about a random guy who is meeting someone for tea. I find the person never gets to have the tea due to something happening along his way, and from there, I just go with it.
8 What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?
Make sure you do not mind being knocked down. It is full of criticism and competition.
